Beginner’s Quilting Class - Technique!

Beginner’s Quilting Class
is a three-session class where you will be constructing and completing your first quilt, measuring 40” x 40”.  Students will learn all of the techniques needed to make a quilt, from beginning to end.  You can then use these techniques to make a quilt of any size, from lap size to king size!  Instruction will include:  Discussion of fabric and what types of fabric to use, how to prepare and lay out fabric for cutting; proper use of the rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler; methods for cutting the fabric; laying out the pieces and sewing perfect 1/4" seams; sewing squares into blocks, blocks into rows, and rows into completed pieced tops; adding an inner border and outer border; making the "quilt sandwich" of pieced top, batting and backing; machine quilting; trimming, squaring and binding your quilt; adding a sleeve for hanging your quilt; and, most importantly, instruction on how to admire your finished project!

Beginner’s Second Class:  On Point!
Technique!

This is the perfect second class to take once you have completed the Beginner’s Quilting Class.  In this class, we will construct a lap-size quilt.  The pieced center will be made up of 5” squares, set on the diagonal, or “on point.”  Quilts set on-point are almost always more interesting then straight set quilts; however, the piecing can be tricky.  I will introduce you to a very easy way to piece your on-point squares and insert “setting triangles” and “corner triangles” that is going to be so easy and fun, you may never made a straight set quilt again!!!

French Braid Quilt  -
Technique!

The French Braid Quilt is easily one of the most dramatic quilt designs you will ever see.  But the real surprise is how easy this quilt is to make.  Believe me, the hardest thing about making this quilt is choosing your fabrics and putting the colors in order in a way that is most pleasing to you.  After you accomplish that, the rest is a breeze.  And you will just love the look of this quilt.  We will be making a small wall hanging in the class so that you can learn the technique.  Kits will be available for this class made up of batik fabrics, with all the color/order work done for  you.  This class is certainly appropriate for the beginner quilter.  Kits are available for this class:  Batik Kit $78.50 and Baby Kit $71.50 - Kits include the French Braid Book.

Cheri Dowd’s Reversible Jacket  -
Advanced Sewer

Cheri Dowd is an incredibly talented artist with exceptional sewing skills.  She has designed her own jacket and published her own pattern , and she is very excited to be able to share her pattern and her joy of sewing with you!  Cheri’s jacket has a look of haute couture, a beautiful drape, and looks stunning in any size.  Cheri will also share her techniques for embellishing the jacket to make it truly your own.  Please stop by the Aiken Quilt Shoppe to see some of the beautiful jackets that Cheri has created.

Folded Log Cabin Wall Hanging -
Technique!

Back in June, I was reading the Keepsake Quilting brochure and saw the information about their Quilt Challenge.  On a lark, I sent in my check and received six pieces of fabric with instructions to make a quilt measuring 30” x 30”.  I choose a technique featured in Sarah Kaufman’s Folded Log Cabin Quilts, and I just loved the technique, and the result!  I would love to share the technique with you.  Surprise kits will be available for this class, or you can create your masterpiece from fabrics you choose.  This class is appropriate for beginners.  Hand sewing will be required to secure the sashings.   Kit for Folded Log Cabin - choose from two color ways - $75.00 (includes Folded Log Cabin Quilt by Sarah Kaufman)

It’s A Wrap

Let your creative juices flow!  With only a length of clothesline, strips of fabric and a zig-zag stitch, you can create a fabric bowl that will delight you!  And the embellishments are just endless – fabric flowers, beads, exotic yards, dyes, appliques – the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.  Fabric bowls make wonderful gifts all by themselves, or filled with sweet treats or even fabric!

Orange Peel!

Billie will provide instruction to make this is a very interesting piece that starts out as circles and magically turns into squares with a beautiful scalloped border!!  An eye-catching quilt perfect for a table topper or a wall hanging, this one is sure to keep people guessing, “How did she do that?”  Stop by AQS to see the sample and see if you can figure it out!!

Cheese & Crackers - Beginners

This is a beautiful little quilt that is easy to make but has a dramatic impact for it’s simplicity.  We will be making the lap-size quilt – all the cutting will be done in the class so no pre-cutting to prepare.  Great for those fat quarters you have been collecting – 10 colorful fat quarters, 2 yards of background fabric and binding – that’s it!  Great for a child’s quilt.  Make it bright and colorful, soft and sweet, or let it all go and use black or navy blue for the background that batiks for the squares!  Just make sure you have fun with it!

Adventures in Applique  -
Technique!

The most requested class that we have had over the past few months is a class on Applique.  There are so many different ways to applique, my brain was swirling on how to do such a class.  Until I saw Alex Anderson’s new book that features six different applique techniques that can be completed both by hand and by machine!  Perfect Book for a class.  I will make up kits containing all of the materials and resources that you will need to try all six different techniques or you can bring your own supplies.  This is a day-long class where we will explore different techniques – hopefully you will be able to find your favorite one (or two) methods and begin your quilting journey into the world of applique!  This class is appropriate for, and created for beginners in Applique!  It will also be very helpful tothose of you whohave been using the same applique technique for some time and wish to explore other techniques for applique.   Adventures in Applique Kit $51.95 - includes Alex Anderson's Hand & Machine Applique book.

Asian Garden  -
Technique!

Oriental fabrics make up our Asian Garden, and a  quilt-as-you-go method has been used to make this most elegant lap quilt.  The blocks on the front of the quilt are completed using a “stitch and flip” technique with solid the 8” blocks on the back of the quilt, both sashed with a high contrast fabric.  The results are just beautiful!  And the technique is one that I am sure you will use over and over again.  There is quite a bit of hand sewing required for this quilt, so if you love to sit with your quilt on your lap and hand stitch your sashings down, this is a wonderful quilt for you.  Appropriate for beginners.  Kit for this class using the fabrics shown in the photo - $82.50.

One Block Wonder  -
Technique!

I was introduced to this technique this past Fall and found it absolutely fascinating!  You need one piece of fabric with a large scale print.  The entire pieced top is made from this one piece of fabric that is cut precisely into triangles and sewn into hexagon blocks, resulting in a gorgeous quilt top that you just won’t believe.  I can’t wait to share this technique and watch as you discover how easy it is to do, and the beautiful results!  No two blocks are the same!  And you can’t believe they all came out of the same piece of fabric.  I have made a few samples that are on display in the shop.  In the class, we will be making a lap size quilt with inner borders and outer borders.  Don't worry!!  Your quilt will come out as a rectangular lap quilt measuring approximately 50 X 70!

Long Arm Certification Class

Aiken Quilt Shoppe is thrilled to offer classes on the use of the new APQS Long Arm Machine, The Lenni Complete Quilting System.  Lenni is a smaller, more convenient version of the legendary professional Millennium, with the freehand freedom of APQS stitch regulated technology.  Our Lenni has a 12-foot table which will allow you to quilt a king-size pieced top and a 18” throat size.  The on-demand automatic stitch regulator will reduce your practice time significantly and get you off to a good start with perfect stitches every time.

You will need to complete this class before scheduling a rental session on the Long Arm machine.  The class will cover everything you need to know about using the long arm, including loading your quilt top, batting and backing; threading the machine; loading and inserting the bobbin; changing needles; using patterns and design tools; using the “zipper system”; and other information that you will need to know to operate the long arm.
Classes are scheduled throughout the month.  If there is a need for additional classes, we will schedule classes to meet that need.  Cost of the class is $95.  This is a day-long class, with the first 3+ hours set aside for the “instruction” session.  So please plan to spend the day.  We have found that much of the learning happens in the afternoon when you load and quilt your own pieced top.

Included in the cost of the class you will receive your own Quilt Zipper , a set of L-style bobbins and bobbin case, a set of Long Arm Machine needles, flower-head pins, and a printed manual on the use of the machine.  Class size is limited to a maximum of three persons per class.  We encourage you to bring a quilt top with you to practice on after the class, so you can put your new skills to use right away.  Remember, don’t bring the prize or heirloom quilt top – try a small donation quilt first until you get the feel of the machine.
